Andy Burnham has definitively dismissed the possibility of calling an early general election within the next year, responding to speculation from opposition parties that such a move was imminent. The UK is required to hold its next general election by August 2029, but some have suggested the prime minister may be considering a vote sooner than that deadline.
When directly questioned about the timing of a snap election, Burnham firmly stated, “I don’t know how many times I’ve done this now but yes, I can rule out calling a general election in the next 12 months.” He emphasized that his priorities lie with serving the public rather than focusing on the Labour Party’s political fortunes, saying, “I’m not thinking about myself. I’m not thinking about my own party and its prospects.”
Despite Burnham’s reassurances, speculation continues from figures within rival parties. Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch recently indicated she suspects Burnham might call an election ahead of schedule, pointing out that the Conservative Party is recovering after 14 years in government and experiencing a politically volatile period with multiple parties involved. She suggested that the timing of Burnham’s policy announcements hinted at an election campaign on the horizon, stating, “I do think Andy Burnham is going to call an election sooner than he is saying… all the policies he announced are for after an election.” Similarly, Reform UK leader Nigel Farage expressed his belief in September that a general election would take place next spring, arguing that Burnham lacks a proper mandate to govern.
Burnham was elected as an MP in June following the Makerfield by-election and subsequently rose to become Labour Party leader and prime minister after Sir Keir Starmer resigned due to losing support from Labour MPs. Since then, he has outlined various ambitions for his government, including addressing Brexit openly. Burnham has promised to uphold the red lines regarding EU freedom of movement, the single market, and customs union as outlined in his party’s 2024 manifesto throughout the parliamentary term leading up to the next general election. Reaffirming his focus, he reiterated, “We’ve got a 10-year plan to come, and that will inform the spending review next year. These are my priorities, not looking at our own internal party political advantage.
