The Metropolitan Police has confirmed that it is looking into reports that a letter containing allegations about Thomas Markle, the father of the Duchess of Sussex, was sent to one of its specialist units back in 2018. Meghan Markle issued a statement acknowledging the existence of the letter, which she described as containing “disturbing allegations” regarding her estranged father’s behavior. She also confirmed that the letter had subsequently been shared with her.
Recently, on Friday, it was reported that child sexual abuse images allegedly linked to Thomas Markle, who is 82 years old, were discovered at his former residence in the Philippines. The Sun newspaper initially broke this story and later revealed that the letter sent to the Metropolitan Police included direct accusations of child sex abuse. Despite these serious claims, UK police are not currently investigating Thomas Markle, who resides in the United States and denies all allegations. Instead, Scotland Yard’s inquiry is focused on verifying claims that the Met’s royal protection unit forwarded the letter to Meghan Markle eight years ago.
The letter was reportedly addressed to the Fixated Threat Assessment Centre, a Met Police unit dedicated to assessing threats against members of the Royal Family and political figures, according to The Sun. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police stated, “We are aware of media reports that officers from the Met’s Royalty and Specialist Protection Command were involved in the passing on of a letter in 2018. We are undertaking inquiries internally in an effort to confirm this.” Thomas Markle had relocated to the Philippines in 2025 after suffering several strokes and is now said to be living in a rehabilitation center in Florida. There, he is learning to walk again following the amputation of a leg in December 2025 surgery.
Meghan Markle said in her Friday statement that when she first received the letter detailing the allegations in 2018, she had been “given assurance that these were being investigated.” Additionally, Meghan’s half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., told The Sun that he discovered child abuse images at their father’s home in the Philippines and reported them to local authorities. The Philippines’ Department of Justice Undersecretary, Nicholas Ty, confirmed to the BBC that an investigation is underway by an anti-human trafficking and child sexual exploitation task force in Cebu. Meanwhile, the country’s Interior Minister, Jonvic Remulla, also told the BBC that national police seized Thomas Markle Sr.’s computer for a thorough digital forensic examination, which is expected to take about a week to complete. The FBI in the United States said it is “aware of the allegations” and will “provide support, as appropriate, to the Philippine authorities,” also confirming that federal investigations regarding any violations of US law will be undertaken.
Meghan is the only child from Thomas Markle’s marriage to her mother, Doria Ragland. However, Thomas Markle has two other children—Samantha and Thomas Markle Jr.—from a previous marriage. The relationship between Meghan and her father deteriorated in the lead-up to her 2018 wedding to Prince Harry. At that time, Thomas Markle was found to have staged photographs with paparazzi in exchange for payment, showing him preparing for Meghan’s wedding. It is believed that Meghan first became aware of the allegations against her father shortly after her marriage. Sources close to the Sussexes have indicated that Meghan was unable to speak publicly about the matter initially, to avoid risking jeopardizing any future investigations or triggering possible legal actions against her
