Tribute paid to Bridgend woman who died of 'stab wounds' after crash

A woman tragically died after crashing her car into a wall, following an incident in which she was reportedly stabbed. Eleanor Barnfield, aged 47, succumbed to her injuries at the hospital after police responded to the crash in Bridgend on Monday. Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered she had sustained puncture wounds that were unrelated to the collision; these wounds are believed to have resulted from a stabbing.

Authorities arrested a 61-year-old man from Bridgend on suspicion of murder in connection with the case. The arrest was made during a significant police operation at a retirement housing complex nearby, where the suspect remains in custody. Eleanor worked for the housing association Valleys to Coast, which manages the complex, and her family has described her as the “kindest, most loving, bravest person in the world.”

South Wales Police confirmed that Eleanor was taken to hospital after the crash on Coity Road at around 12:40 BST on Monday but unfortunately died later. The police were also called to the Ger-y-Nant sheltered housing retirement complex, where the man was apprehended. Eleanor’s family expressed profound grief, saying she “meant everything to us and will be forever loved and missed deeply by her devoted family and friends. She was our rock.”

Jo Oak, chief executive of Valleys to Coast, conveyed the organisation’s deep sorrow over the loss of their colleague. She emphasized Eleanor’s valuable role within the team and the positive impact she had on the communities served by Valleys to Coast. Oak also assured that the organisation will fully cooperate with South Wales Police during their ongoing investigation. Superintendent Jason Rees expressed condolences to Eleanor’s family and highlighted that detectives and specialist staff are actively investigating the incident, while appreciation was extended to the local community for their support and patience
