The incident took place near Clapton Common in Hackney around 13:40 BST on Monday, where the suspect was apprehended by members of Shomrim, a Jewish neighborhood watch organization, before police arrived.
The Metropolitan Police have charged the man with racially aggravated common assault, with the victims sustaining minor injuries. Authorities are treating the case as a suspected antisemitic hate crime and have responded by increasing police presence in the affected area. The man remains in custody and has also been further arrested for grievous bodily harm in connection with a different incident in Islington that occurred the previous Friday.
Chief Inspector Erica Crawshaw described the event as “an alarming and distressing incident” and expressed gratitude toward the Shomrim volunteers for their role in detaining the suspect. She acknowledged the impact the assault has had on the Jewish community in Hackney, noting that enhanced patrols are underway and that police are engaging with community leaders to offer additional reassurance.
The Metropolitan Police have appealed to the public for any information related to the incident or for others who may have experienced similar assaults to come forward. The force continues its investigation into the matter as part of broader efforts to address hate crimes in the area
