Three police officers sustained injuries in County Down when a lorry they were chasing collided with their vehicle after driving on the wrong side of the road at high speed. Authorities apprehended a 36-year-old man in connection with the incident. He faces allegations of driving while impaired by alcohol or drugs, driving while disqualified, and dangerous driving.

The police car involved suffered significant damage, but fortunately, the officers’ injuries are not considered serious at this time. The events unfolded shortly before 11:30 p.m. BST, following a report about a blue articulated lorry swerving on Moygannon Road near Warrenpoint.

According to Chief Inspector Will Brown, officers responded to the alert and found a vehicle matching the description on Derryleckagh Road in Newry. When police signalled for the lorry to stop, it instead sped off on the wrong side of the road, crashing into the police car and continuing toward Rostrevor.

Chief Inspector Brown added, “The lorry later came to a stop in the Water Street area of Rostrevor where the driver, aged 36, made off on foot but was detained by officers following a short foot chase.” The man remains in custody. Brown also expressed appreciation for the officers’ efforts, saying, “Our officers put themselves on the front line to help keep people safe. Thankfully, no one sustained more serious injuries during this incident, including officers and other road users.
