A woman tragically passed away three months after sustaining serious burns caused by an explosion during a garden fire. Katie Louise Marshall, aged 32, from Vaughan Williams Drive in Newport, died at Bristol Royal Infirmary on 24 September.

According to the hearing at Gwent Coroner’s Court, the incident occurred in June when Marshall placed a black bin bag containing rubbish and a paint canister onto the fire she had lit in her garden. The paint canister exploded, prompting a neighbour to alert emergency services. Initially, Marshall was admitted to the Grange Hospital in Cwmbran before being moved to Morriston Hospital in Swansea, where she was treated for burns covering 45-55% of her body.

She was later transferred to Bristol, where she ultimately died from bacterial pneumonia, which resulted from the inhalation injuries and the burns she sustained. The senior coroner for Gwent, Caroline Saunders, described Marshall’s death as “unnatural” and has postponed the hearing.

Coroner Saunders stated that her investigation will examine the details surrounding the fire, how Marshall received her injuries, and the subsequent medical treatment she underwent. A full inquest into the circumstances is scheduled for 9 June 2027
