A tragic incident has unfolded off the coast of Lewis, where a fishing boat carrying three men has gone missing. Authorities have confirmed that one body was recovered during the extensive search operations, which continue for the two remaining crew members who are still unaccounted for. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) reported that the alarm was raised late on Tuesday evening after the vessel failed to return as expected from Lewis.
Search efforts, coordinated from the Port of Ness on the island’s northern coast, have involved a combination of air and sea resources, including a plane, two helicopters, and two lifeboats, alongside volunteer assistance. Kenneth Macleod, a local councillor, expressed deep sorrow over the situation, describing it as a “very dark day” for the community and extending sympathy to the families affected.
Police Scotland stated that the body was located just before 3 a.m., but the vessel and the other two crew members remain missing. Chief Inspector Ross McCartney, the local area commander, acknowledged the significant impact the incident has had on residents throughout the Outer Hebrides region. He reassured the public that efforts continue in partnership with multiple agencies to locate the missing men and the fishing boat, while also confirming that counseling and specialist support are being offered to the victims’ families.
The RNLI confirmed that Stornoway’s all-weather lifeboat was dispatched shortly after the initial report on Tuesday night, with additional resources from Lochinver joining the search early Wednesday morning. The operation also involved coastguard helicopters from both Stornoway and Shetland, alongside local boats. The ongoing search has been complicated by severe weather forecasts, including strong winds and heavy rain linked to the remnants of Hurricane Isaias. A Met Office yellow warning has been issued for gusts that may reach up to 70 mph in the Highlands and Western Isles, intensifying the challenges faced by all involved in the rescue efforts
