A 66-year-old Maserati driver, Ronald Dowling, has received a suspended prison sentence after causing a crash that killed a woman and seriously injured two others. The incident occurred on 26 October 2023 at New Inn, Pontypool, when Dowling overtook another vehicle in heavy rain, lost control due to aquaplaning, and collided with Sharon Berry’s car. Tragically, Berry later died from the injuries she sustained, while Dowling’s wife, Kim, was left paralysed, and their friend Jane Beedell suffered significant injuries.

The Merthyr Crown Court learned that Dowling was driving with his wife and their lifelong friend Jane, en route to a hospital appointment at the time of the accident. Despite adverse weather conditions marked by heavy rain and high surface water, Dowling was found to be travelling at 76mph just moments before the collision. Berry had stopped her car because of the hazardous weather, but Dowling’s vehicle skidded and struck her stationary Audi A3. Berry endured catastrophic injuries and was hospitalized for three months before passing away in January 2024.

In a moving victim impact statement, Berry’s son Luke described the profound loss his family experienced, particularly as he is expecting a child whom his mother will never meet. He expressed the emotional void left by his mother’s absence, saying, “She was loving, caring and would do anything to make sure I was OK. My family will never be the same without her.” Jane Beedell also appeared in court to describe the extensive injuries she suffered, which included brain bleeding, multiple fractures, and wounds. She recounted how the crash transformed her life, stating that she now struggles with anxiety, depression, and the inability to perform everyday tasks independently. After 48 years in the civil service, Beedell lost her job and now relies on benefits, adding, “I sometimes feel guilty I survived.”

Following the accident, Kim Dowling was left paralysed with severe spinal injuries and was unable to speak after having her voice box removed. During sentencing, Dowling’s barrister highlighted his client’s deep remorse and emotional distress over the tragic consequences of his actions. Although the charges were initially for dangerous driving, they were later reduced to careless driving, to which Dowling pleaded guilty. Despite a previous six-month driving ban related to penalty points accrued about 15 years ago, Dowling had no prior convictions. The judge, Celia Hughes, acknowledged the senselessness of Sharon Berry’s death and emphasized that no sentence could undo the damage caused. Dowling was given a 27-month prison sentence, suspended for two years, along with a four-year driving disqualification, 250 hours of community service, and an order to pay prosecution costs
