Rail travelers are being advised to verify their travel plans before setting off due to issues affecting the overhead electrical lines on the West Coast Main Line in Staffordshire. A fault in the 25,000-volt cables supplying power to trains near Penkridge has resulted in service disruptions between Stafford and Wolverhampton.
Repairs were underway to address the problem, and by midday (12:00 BST), National Rail announced that the tracks between Stafford and Birmingham New Street had reopened. Despite this, travelers should anticipate ongoing delays and disturbances until approximately 16:00 BST on Saturday.
Adam Checkley from Network Rail explained that although the fault has been resolved, the disruption will continue because trains and their crews have been displaced: “Our teams have now cleared the issue allowing the route to reopen, but with trains and their crew out of position, delays and cancellations will continue throughout the day.” To aid passengers, rail replacement buses are operating from Birmingham, Stafford, and Wolverhampton stations.
Checkley also expressed apologies for the inconvenience caused by the overhead line failure near Four Ashes, close to Penkridge. He emphasized the importance of checking National Rail Enquiries prior to traveling, noting that significant service disruption is expected throughout the day.
