A man sustained serious injuries after being attacked by a tiger at Yorkshire Wildlife Park, according to police reports. South Yorkshire Police received a call around 13:35 BST concerning a man who had entered the tiger enclosure at the wildlife attraction near Doncaster. Following the incident, the park immediately activated its emergency response protocols and began cooperating closely with authorities to determine the circumstances of the event.
The park confirmed that it would remain closed for the rest of the weekend. Police have verified that the tiger was responsible for the attack, resulting in significant injuries to the individual. Efforts are underway by officers to reach the man’s family. Authorities have reassured the public that the tiger stayed within its enclosure throughout the situation, stating there is no ongoing risk to visitors.
In the aftermath, the entire park was evacuated, with police still present on site. Officials have urged the public to refrain from sharing upsetting videos related to the incident. Witness Karmelle Pelham, who was visiting the park with family, described the evacuation process. She recalled how staff gradually moved visitors out of the lemur area and that she heard several loud noises resembling gunshots. A helicopter was seen circling overhead, prompting visitors to realize that something serious had occurred. She also noted that a large black tarpaulin was placed over the tiger enclosure.
Pelham commended the staff for their calm and efficient handling of the emergency, saying, “Nobody was really panicked. It was all very, very well organised. They did a great job of getting us out without panicking anyone.” The Yorkshire Ambulance Service confirmed deploying an air ambulance, two land ambulances, and a doctor to the park. Yorkshire Wildlife Park emphasized that the safety and wellbeing of visitors, staff, and animals continue to be their top priorities.
Yorkshire Wildlife Park originally opened in April 2009, with the tiger enclosure established in 2011. This habitat, named Land of the Tigers, allows the big cats to roam woodlands and grasslands, as well as enjoy a waterfall pool, according to the park’s website. Besides tigers, the park is home to lions, leopards, cheetahs, polar bears, brown bears, and sea lions.
