Birmingham Airport has revealed an ambitious £2 billion expansion project that could see passenger numbers more than double while generating thousands of new jobs in the region. According to a spokesperson, the draft proposal focuses on maximizing current runway capacity and enhancing passenger facilities significantly over the next 15 years. The airport has launched an eight-week public consultation to gather feedback on the plan.
Nick Barton, the airport’s chief executive, explained that the initiative is designed to prepare Birmingham Airport for future demand, but emphasized the importance of a “fair and stable taxation environment” for its success. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander expressed government support, highlighting a commitment to the continued growth of the aviation sector throughout the country.
In 2025, Birmingham Airport recorded a milestone with over 13 million passengers passing through. The expansion plan targets increasing this figure to nearly 30 million annually. Airport leaders stated that the development represents a “clear commitment” to the local area and aims to create more than 50,000 jobs, including 3,800 positions directly at the airport. They also stressed the importance of responsible and sustainable growth for communities near the site.
The project’s initial phase could begin as early as 2027, with planned investments in baggage handling and terminal upgrades, additional aircraft stands, and improvements to surface access. Despite recent baggage handling problems in August that affected hundreds of travelers, airport officials are keen to move forward. Local residents and businesses are encouraged to participate in the consultation, which includes online, postal options, and 20 public events starting in Hampton on Arden on 16 October.
Nick Barton remarked, “The £2bn proposed investment is unprecedented at Birmingham Airport and will take our airport close to 30 million passengers.” He conveyed the strong confidence this expansion shows in the airport and the wider region. However, Barton warned that rising operational costs related to wages, energy, and taxation could jeopardize the plans unless the financial and regulatory environment becomes more favourable.
Heidi Alexander described the expansion as a “massive boost” for the West Midlands, noting it would unlock investment and create 50,000 well-paid local jobs. Richard Parker, the Labour mayor of the West Midlands, also praised the masterplan’s ambition, emphasizing its potential to strengthen international connections and support local businesses and supply chains. Parker added that the consultation period offers a valuable opportunity for residents and business owners to influence the airport’s future development for the benefit of local communities
