A landslide has caused a significant disruption for drivers on the Isle of Skye, resulting in the closure of the A855 road and triggering a 40-mile detour. The incident occurred on Friday afternoon when part of the ground gave way beside the A855, located north of Uig, and slid onto a nearby access road. Following an inspection, authorities decided that the road would remain closed throughout the weekend.

The A855, which circles the Trotternish peninsula in the northern part of the island, now has a diversion in place to reroute traffic. Despite the landslide being severe enough to shut the road, there were no injuries reported. The event was actually recorded by CCTV cameras from a house nearby, providing clear evidence of the incident.

Interestingly, a group of schoolchildren visiting the area were temporarily stranded without access to their packed lunches due to the blockage. Fortunately, a local woman came to their aid by cycling to retrieve their food, ensuring the children were not left hungry during their outing.

Local councillor Chrissie Gillies has indicated that the road closure might extend into the following week as surveyors carry out detailed assessments of the affected area. These ongoing investigations will determine when and how the road can be safely reopened
