Three teenagers die after car enters River Wear in Sunderland

A tragic incident occurred near Wearmouth Bridge in Sunderland when a black Audi A3 left the road at Panns Bank and ended up in the River Wear. This happened shortly before 13:30 BST, according to Northumbria Police. Inside the vehicle were four individuals, three of whom were teenagers who lost their lives in the accident.

One 17-year-old boy managed to escape the submerged car and reached the shore safely. He was taken to hospital with injuries described as non-serious. Following the rescue, the young man was arrested in relation to the incident, as noted by the police. Despite efforts, the bodies of two teenage boys and one teenage girl were recovered from the river.

Police have confirmed that no other vehicles were involved in the crash. Ch Supt Scott Cowie, Sunderland’s area commander, described the event as “a truly tragic incident” and extended his condolences to the families and friends affected.

He emphasized that the investigation was still in its early stages, with authorities working to determine the full circumstances surrounding the event. The police remain committed to supporting those impacted while continuing their inquiries
