Following the stabbing of Nowak, who was from Chafford Hundred in Essex, Digwa falsely claimed to the police that he had been the victim of a racially motivated attack. This deception was a key point in the aftermath of the incident.
The case gained significant attention when police body-worn camera footage was released, revealing officers failing to administer first aid to Nowak. Instead, they handcuffed him while he was struggling to breathe and lying critically injured. This footage led to widespread outrage and protests.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct has since been involved, announcing an investigation into two officers for potential gross misconduct related to their handling of the situation. Meanwhile, during demonstrations in Southampton on 2 June, twelve police officers and a police dog sustained injuries as tensions escalated. Protesters initially gathered outside the city centre police station before moving near both Digwa’s family home and the site of the stabbing.
In connection with the protests, over 30 individuals have been charged with violent disorder. On 15 June, the case was escalated when former Solicitor General Ellie Reeves KC referred it to the Court of Appeal using the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme. Additionally, Sikh community leaders have spoken out about a “backlash” and an increase in “hate crime” targeting their community following the incident
