Angela Scanlon has been named the new host of BBC Radio 2’s drivetime show, stepping into the role previously held by Sara Cox, who has moved to the breakfast slot. Starting in November, Scanlon will be on air weekdays from 4 pm to 7 pm. Expressing her excitement about the role, the Irish presenter remarked on the unique nature of radio, where “millions of people, all having completely different days, [come] piling into the same conversation for a few hours.”
Previously, Scanlon had a stint hosting a Sunday early morning show on Radio 2 from 2018 until 2021. When Cox vacated the drivetime position in May, several presenters, including Joel Dommett, Jason Manford, Ellie Taylor, Alex Jones, and Gary Davies, filled in during the interim. Outside of radio, Scanlon is recognized for her work on television programs such as The One Show, This Morning, Your Home Made Perfect, and The Apprentice: Unfinished Business. She also competed on Strictly Come Dancing in 2023.
Scanlon shared that she will be with listeners “in your ears, your cars and your kitchens – on the school run, on the way home, or standing at the hob wondering what on earth to feed a small but hungry mob.” She emphasized her enthusiasm for capturing a wide range of experiences, saying, “I want all of it: the stories, the opinions, the chaos, the tiny triumphs and the things you probably shouldn’t admit on national radio.” Helen Thomas, Radio 2’s controller, praised Scanlon’s warmth and quick wit, noting her popularity during her time covering the drivetime show this summer. Thomas highlighted the show’s significance in helping people transition into their evenings positively and expressed gratitude to all the guest hosts who covered the slot after Cox’s departure.
In addition to her new Radio 2 role, Scanlon recently hosted the Virgin Radio weekend breakfast show following Graham Norton’s exit in 2024, and she currently co-presents the Get A Grip podcast. Separately, Radio 2 also announced that Ben Earle will take over their weekly country music programme after Bob Harris stepped down. Harris, known affectionately as “Whispering” Bob, hosted the show for 27 years before leaving in June shortly after revealing that his prostate cancer had spread to his spine. As one half of the British country duo The Shires, Earle brings both his musical background and five years of experience presenting a weekly show on Absolute Radio Country. Helen Thomas described Earle as the perfect successor to Harris and expressed hopes that he will hold the position for many years to come
