Lithium-ion battery fire killed Bootle mum and three children

A devastating house fire in Bootle, Merseyside, resulted in the deaths of a mother and her three children. The incident took place in the early hours of 22 September at a property on Stone Square. The victims were identified as 36-year-old Elisha Brabin and her children Leo, aged 16, Ellis, eight, and Prudence, seven.

An investigation carried out by Merseyside Police and the Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS) determined that the fire originated from an electrical issue related to a lithium-ion battery. These types of batteries are commonly found in devices such as electric bikes and scooters. Kev Johnson from MFRS emphasized the dangers posed by these batteries, stating, “This tragedy highlights the very real risks posed by lithium-ion batteries, which we confirmed as the source of the fire.”

At the height of the fire, six fire engines responded to the scene, where firefighters discovered the four victims unresponsive in an upstairs bedroom. Additionally, a man was hospitalized with burn injuries from the fire. MFRS has not specified the exact use of the battery involved, but the fire service reported an alarming number of incidents related to such batteries on Merseyside. Between April 2023 and August 2026, there were 150 fires linked to lithium-ion batteries in the area, resulting in five fatalities.

In light of the risks, MFRS urges the public to carefully follow manufacturers’ guidelines, using only approved batteries and chargers. Kev Johnson warned that improper use could significantly increase the danger of fires. He also advised people to be vigilant for signs of battery failure, such as swelling, unusual noises, strong odors, charging issues, or smoke, and to cease using the battery immediately if any of these symptoms appear. Family members paid tribute to Elisha Brabin, describing her as a devoted mother who lived for her children. They expressed profound heartbreak over the loss, describing it as “unimaginable” and declaring that their beloved children and Elisha “have all been taken from us far too soon.
