Paul Gorton, known for his appearance on the BBC series *The Traitors*, had been sharing holiday photos on social media while vacationing with his wife and two young children. However, upon returning to his Cheshire home, he discovered it had been burglarized just days earlier. Reflecting on the timing, Paul remarked, “The eerie bit is at 21:10 BST I posted that me and Kate were by the side of the pool, we’ve got full bellies, the kids are in bed, we’re actually having our little bit of the holiday. About 20 minutes later, little did we know, our house has been broken into.”
During the break-in on 28 August, thieves stole Paul’s bicycle along with several sentimental possessions, including a priceless ring that belonged to Kate’s grandmother. They gained entry by breaking the bi-fold doors at the rear of the property through a method called lock snapping and additionally cut the broadband connection to disrupt communication. The damage left visible marks on the door lock, illustrating the forced entry.
Paul, originally from St Helens, contacted Cheshire Police to report the incident. The authorities described this burglary as a “one-off hit,” which led Paul to suspect it was a targeted intrusion rather than a random crime. He stated, “They said they normally see people come in from far and wide and they [target] a couple of houses in a night but this isn’t the case.” Paul believes someone who follows him online saw his posts about being away and decided to take advantage of the situation.
In response to the incident, Paul has partnered with Compare the Market. The company employed a licensed private investigator to analyze publicly available digital data from nine volunteers, successfully uncovering seven home addresses. Impressively, the quickest address was identified in just 15 minutes, with some leads appearing within 50 seconds. Paul emphasized that security goes beyond social media caution, saying, “I’ve learned to think about the whole picture with locks, alarms, lights, what you’re posting online and whether you’re accidentally advertising that nobody’s home.” Cheshire Police confirmed their investigation into the burglary is ongoing, though no arrests have been made thus far
