Steve Hunt, a council leader from Neath Port Talbot, has resigned following an incident where he was reported to have fallen while intoxicated after allegations surfaced that he consumed “a whole bottle of gin” and made threatening remarks about the Welsh political party Plaid Cymru. Hunt acknowledged that he “should have exercised better judgement” after becoming visibly drunk during a Welsh Local Government Association conference.
Despite the claims, Hunt denied actually drinking an entire bottle of gin. He described his comment about wanting to “wipe out” Plaid Cymru politically as mere “banter” rather than a genuine threat. He emphasized that the remark was intended to be understood within the context of political disagreement and should not be interpreted beyond that. Additionally, Hunt cited “personal circumstances” as factors influencing his conduct, noting the significant pressures and responsibilities associated with his role as council leader.
A witness at the conference reported that Hunt, representing the Crynant, Onllwyn, and Seven Sisters ward as an independent councillor, was loudly boasting about heavy drinking. Reflecting on the incident, Hunt admitted he had consumed “far beyond what was sensible” and expressed regret over his actions. He apologized to the Plaid Cymru group leader the next morning following the event.
Hunt’s leadership had been marked by a coalition between Independents and Plaid Cymru since the 2022 local elections, which ended the Labour Party’s longstanding control over Neath Port Talbot Council. In announcing his resignation, Hunt stated that stepping down was in the “best interests” of the council and its communities.
