Maddy Cusack: Remember the person, not just the player, family says

Maddy Cusack is warmly remembered by her sister and cousin as a vibrant presence and a source of joy in their lives. Sitting together on a bench dedicated in her memory, Olivia Cusack describes her older sister as “the person I looked up to my whole life,” while cousin Emily Reilly recalls Maddy as the one who “used to get us in trouble with my dad.” Despite these cherished memories, both are left grappling with unanswered questions as they mark the third anniversary of Maddy’s passing.

Maddy, a former footballer for Sheffield United, was discovered unconscious at her home in Derbyshire at the age of 27. An inquest looking into the circumstances surrounding her death began in June and was originally expected to conclude in July. However, proceedings have been halted for several months as Sheffield United searches for medical records relevant to the case. This pause has extended the waiting period for Maddy’s family, who now face the prospect of hearing further evidence at the earliest in December. Olivia describes the delay as “extremely overwhelming,” sharing with BBC Newsbeat that “It is very emotional and you can find yourself frustrated at times,” adding, “They’re very difficult days.”

The memorial bench in Scargill Park, West Hallam – where Maddy’s family all grew up – has become a place of reflection for Olivia and Emily. With their birthdays both in late October, Emily notes that they had always planned to spend these occasions together, but now she finds herself visiting the bench alone. “She used to get us in trouble with my dad when we were younger,” Emily explains, “It was always her idea then I’d take the blame for it.” As the inquest explores the more challenging aspects of Maddy’s life, her family is keen to highlight the fun and lively person she was, a side they feel has been overshadowed.

In continuing Maddy’s legacy, Olivia and other family members have established a foundation to support aspiring female footballers, a project that keeps Olivia motivated. “The foundation keeps me going,” she says. “It’s been a real lifeline to be able to continue her story.” Recently, Olivia organised a nearly 30-mile walk from Bramall Lane, Sheffield United’s stadium, to an area close to Derby where Maddy lived. “The aim with the walk is just to do her proud,” Olivia says, adding, “Maddy would love that we were all challenging ourselves.”
