Residents of Pavilion Court affected by the recent fire have been provided with temporary hotel accommodation in the local area. The council confirmed it is actively working to secure alternative housing arrangements for all those displaced as the Grand Burstin hotel undergoes further safety inspections and necessary repair work.
Britannia Hotels Group, the operator of the Grand Burstin, issued a statement affirming its full cooperation with Kent Police in their ongoing investigation into the fire’s cause. The group emphasized its close communication with all relevant authorities and assured that it will offer any assistance or information needed as inquiries proceed. It also highlighted that the safety and wellbeing of its guests and staff remain its top priority.
The emergency response involved 26 fire engines attending the hotel shortly after 01:00 BST on Saturday, according to Kent Fire & Rescue Service. The blaze is believed to have originated in the building’s basement. By Sunday, the fire service announced that firefighting efforts had concluded and that Kent Police had taken over management of the scene. Station Manager Lawrence Pater described the fire as “very severe,” raising concerns about the building’s structural stability and prompting consultations with inspectors.
Folkestone & Hythe District Council established a welfare centre at the Three Hills Sports Park to support those evacuated from the hotel. Local businesses, including The Harbour Inn pub nearby, also provided assistance by opening their doors to affected individuals. Some evacuees shared their experiences with the BBC: John Dighton, a Pavilion Court resident, described the uncertainty faced as he was told to leave his flat on Saturday evening. Others, such as Ross Honeycomb and senior couple Kevin and Kathleen Crawford, recounted how they were awoken by fire alarms and witnessed the severity of the incident firsthand.
