Two Britons among three killed in Swiss Alps light aircraft crash

A tragic plane crash occurred in the Swiss Alps, resulting in the deaths of three individuals, including two British nationals. The incident took place near Leukerbad, a town situated in the southern canton of Valais. The light aircraft involved was a Cirrus SR22T, which had departed from Sion airport located in the Rhône Valley.

According to reports from authorities, the plane collided with a mountain slope only about ten minutes after takeoff for reasons that are still unclear. Witnesses at the scene observed flames and smoke rising following the impact. Emergency responders, including personnel from the Valais Rescue Organisation, police officers, and firefighters, were dispatched to the crash site, supported by three helicopters.

An investigation has been launched by the Swiss Transportation Safety Board, while both the Valais Police and the Office of the Attorney General have also initiated inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the accident. Efforts to formally identify the victims are currently ongoing.

The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has confirmed it is assisting the families of the two British citizens who lost their lives.
