Police confirm 'targeted attack' after man named in suspected shooting

A 35-year-old man named William Watson, known locally as Billy, was fatally shot in what police are treating as a targeted attack at a residence on Harestanes Road in Armadale, West Lothian. The incident took place on Saturday, and police have confirmed they are investigating the use of a firearm in the case. Watson was pronounced dead at the scene, and the area remained secured with officers stationed outside the property as of Monday.

Authorities are also examining whether two fires in the vicinity are connected to the shooting. One fire involved a vehicle set alight in Netherhouses, while another affected a derelict house on Wotherspoon Road. Uniformed police officers established cordons around both locations. The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service reported that no injuries were sustained in either fire.

Police Scotland has classified Watson’s death as suspicious and plans to conduct a postmortem examination. Superintendent Jocelyn Thomson addressed community concerns, noting the continued strong police presence. She emphasized that the attack was specifically targeted and reassured the public that a dedicated team of experienced investigators is actively working on the case. Additional patrols are maintaining a presence in the area to provide reassurance.

Local Member of Parliament Kirsteen Sullivan described the attack as “horrific and alarming,” extending sympathy to those affected in the community. She relayed that Police Scotland conveyed no immediate threat to the wider population and that the incident appeared isolated. Sullivan urged the public to heed police advice and avoid speculation, especially on social media, while the investigation is underway.
