Schools to close early again for A66 crash funeral

A recent tragic collision on the A66 near Middlesbrough resulted in the deaths of seven individuals, including two police officers. Among those who lost their lives was 17-year-old Theo Rae, who was one of five young men traveling in a car that was driving the wrong way on the road before it collided head-on with a Cleveland Police vehicle in the early hours of 22 August. The other occupants of the vehicle — Michael Robert Cahill, Jakub Matusiak, Makai Saddington, and Cole Robert Worthy — also died in the crash.

In light of the tragedy, several schools in the Middlesbrough area decided to close early to allow children and staff to attend Theo Rae’s funeral. For instance, a number of educational institutions, including a local primary school, cited the need to ensure “safe transit home for all our families” as a reason for early dismissal. Schools in South Bank had previously closed early for the funeral of Jakub Matusiak, with police confirming that the event proceeded smoothly with minimal disruption to traffic.

Middlesbrough Council explained that the early school closures were partly due to concerns about possible localized traffic congestion caused by the funeral arrangements, which might have otherwise led to travel delays later in the afternoon. Specific schools such as Outwood Academy Acklam, Newham Bridge Primary School, Acklam Whin Primary School, and Green Lane School announced staggered early closing times to reduce congestion and ensure the safety of students and families. Outwood Academy Acklam emphasized that their decision was made after “careful consideration of the potential impact on pupils, staff and families traveling to and from the school.”

The fatal crash occurred just before 04:00 BST on 22 August, claiming the lives of officers PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, who died at the scene. Alongside the five young men in the Volkswagen Passat, the collision has since prompted a major police investigation. As part of an extensive operation targeting organized crime, dozens of arrests have been made following the incident. Theo Rae’s funeral service is scheduled to take place at Teesside Crematorium in Middlesbrough, with Cleveland Police expected to maintain a visible presence to support the community during this difficult time
