UK weather: Cooler temperatures with wind and rain this week

As the meteorological summer draws to a close and schools resume, the UK is facing a return to unsettled weather conditions. Following a brief heatwave on Sunday, low pressure systems are expected to dominate the early part of the week, bringing wet and windy weather particularly to the northern regions. These conditions are forecast to ease around midweek, with Wednesday and Thursday seeing more settled weather patterns. Across England and Wales, temperatures will feel cooler in comparison to Sunday’s peak, when south-east England nearly reached 29°C (84°F).

Last week saw significant rainfall, making it the wettest week in England since early February, according to data from the Environment Agency. Meanwhile, Spain experienced its highest temperature of the year, recording 45.7°C in Huelva. Despite a relatively dry weekend for many areas in the UK, the overall trend is set for a change with cooler and fresher air arriving.

On Monday, a falling pressure system accompanied by a shift in wind direction signals incoming cooler conditions. A weather front moving south-eastwards from the north-west will bring a band of cloud and occasional showers over England and Wales, though sunny spells are expected to follow. Temperatures will reach up to 25°C in the south-east, but cooler and less humid air will trail the cloud front. Northern Ireland can expect heavier rainfall in the morning that will extend into Scotland and Cumbria by the afternoon. Alongside strong, gusty south-westerly winds, temperatures in these northern areas will be limited to around 17°C.

Tuesday will continue to see a deep low pressure area northwest of Scotland, resulting in particularly windy conditions across northern and western Scotland, with gusts potentially reaching 50-60 mph. While these regions are accustomed to strong winds during this season, there could still be some disruption if the winds funnel through central lowland areas. Frequent showers will accompany the blustery weather in the north. South of these regions, England and Wales will deal with lingering rain in the southeast during the morning which will clear later on. However, this rain is expected to be light, as drought conditions remain in place for much of England and Wales. Moving into midweek, the low pressure area will drift into the North Sea, bringing windy conditions to the east coast, but elsewhere rising pressure will result in drier weather with sunny spells and lighter winds. Showers will likely return to western parts of the UK on Thursday before easing on Friday as they move eastwards, with temperatures stabilizing near seasonal averages, hitting up to 22°C in the southeast
