A street artist from Sheffield has responded to criticism surrounding his mural of snooker champion Ronnie O’Sullivan, emphasizing that the artwork is not yet complete. Chris Ashmore was tasked with creating the piece for the rear wall of the Spot On Snooker Club located on Langsett Road. The mural depicts O’Sullivan, a seven-time world champion in the sport.
Reactions among the local community have been mixed. While a number of residents expressed admiration for the mural, others voiced negative opinions, describing the image as “zombie-like,” “shocking,” and referring to O’Sullivan’s facial features as “skeletal.” These contrasting views sparked widespread attention after the artwork began circulating on social media.
Ashmore shared his surprise at the intense public reaction but clarified that his work was still in progress. He had only completed two weeks of the five-week schedule allocated to finish the mural, with additional “touch-ups” still needed. He also pointed out that the scaffolding he used to paint the piece limited his ability to see the full image, affecting his perception of the final product.
“I usually use a scissor lift, where you can stand back and see things as a whole, but I couldn’t use it as the land is too uneven,” Ashmore explained.
