Caroline Bryan’s teenage years in the early 1990s are memories she never anticipated revisiting in the final weeks of her life. Diagnosed with mesothelioma, a terminal cancer caused by asbestos exposure, Caroline passed away at just 46. During her illness, she became convinced that the asbestos exposure responsible for her disease occurred during her school years. Caroline’s daughter, Brooklyn, recalls that her mother had no occupational history that would have involved asbestos exposure, nor did the family ever live in homes likely to contain asbestos. Caroline was primarily a stay-at-home mother, and mesothelioma was a diagnosis unfamiliar to the family until Caroline’s illness made them learn more about this aggressive cancer. Brooklyn remembers her mother as a “kind and caring person” who always went “above and beyond for anybody.” As Caroline faced her diagnosis, she sought legal action not only to pursue justice for herself but also to prevent similar tragedies for others.
Further investigation into Caroline’s past has led the family to believe that her asbestos exposure came from Fitzalan High School in Cardiff, where she attended in the 1990s. Legal representatives uncovered council documents indicating that asbestos materials were widely used throughout the school site, which was reportedly in poor condition during Caroline’s attendance. Brooklyn described the building as having broken ceiling tiles and debris, conditions her mother had mentioned, though at the time she was unaware of the hazard.
