A 49-year-old man named Hekmat Omar Ali Hakim, residing on St James Road in Higher Broughton, Salford, has been formally charged in relation to the synagogue attack in Manchester that resulted in the deaths of two men. Counter-terrorism police have charged Hakim with failing to disclose information about terrorist activity, a charge directly linked to the events of October 2nd when the attack took place at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue.

Hakim has been sent into custody and is scheduled to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Friday. Although authorities have arrested eight individuals connected to the attack so far, this is the first charge that is specifically associated with the day the two victims lost their lives. The attacker, Jihad Al-Shamie, was shot and killed by police officers at the scene of the incident.

Assistant Chief Constable Rob Potts from Counter Terrorism Policing North West described the charge as a major step in the ongoing investigation. He expressed his sympathy for those affected by the tragedy, including the families of the deceased and the survivors, stating: “This is a significant development in our investigation, and my thoughts are with all those affected by the attack, particularly the bereaved loved ones and survivors. We have updated them and continue to offer them as much support as possible.” He further emphasized the team’s dedication to uncovering the complete circumstances behind the attack and identifying anyone involved.

Earlier this year in July, Mohammad Bashir, aged 31, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 17 years after being convicted for planning an attack on a military base alongside the Manchester synagogue assailant. Bashir had driven Al-Shamie on a 10-hour round trip for hostile reconnaissance at the UK Defence Academy in Shrivenham, Oxfordshire on August 14, 2025. Following this reconnaissance mission, Al-Shamie carried out the attack on the Heaton Park Synagogue some weeks later and was fatally shot by police officers at the scene
