Bristol artist Banksy's works cost taxpayers nearly £150k

Street artist Banksy’s works have resulted in public spending nearing £150,000 for cleaning and security, with costs anticipated to increase. The most significant expense is tied to a mural that appeared on the Royal Courts of Justice in London in September 2025. Efforts to remove the artwork and maintain security around the Grade II-listed building have cost over £85,000 so far. The Ministry of Justice has revealed that £50,000 alone was spent on paint removal, alongside an additional £35,300 for security and overtime.

This information surfaced through Freedom of Information requests and is likely to spark renewed discussions about whether Banksy’s art constitutes vandalism or serves as valuable cultural contribution. Banksy, who rose to prominence from Bristol’s graffiti scene in the 1990s, is internationally recognized for his murals and installations, which frequently emerge without warning and attract considerable public attention. The controversial mural in question depicts a judge wearing a wig striking a protester with a gavel and was confirmed as Banksy’s work through his website and Instagram.

The authorities responsible for the site have explained the difficulties involved. A spokesperson for HM Courts and Tribunals Service emphasized the obligation to preserve the original character of the listed building. Following reports of criminal damage on 8 September, Metropolitan Police began investigation, and no arrests have been made to date. Court staff quickly cordoned off the affected area and guarded it while cleaning attempts started immediately. Despite initial cleaning efforts, the paint remains stubborn, requiring contractors to employ laser technology, with possible further restoration methods if needed, including replacing stonework.

Public reaction to Banksy’s mural is divided. Shadow Justice Secretary Nick Timothy criticized the artist, calling the costs to taxpayers “outrageous” and asserting that Banksy should be held financially responsible. On the other hand, art critic Estelle Lovatt highlighted the positive impact of Banksy’s work, noting its role in tourism and its accessibility without gallery fees. She described Banksy as a figure who unites people through art in ways that politics cannot, comparing him to a town crier or Pied Piper.
