Umar Dumbuya died during Duke of Edinburgh expedition on River Wye

An 18-year-old named Umar Dumbuya tragically lost his life after encountering difficulties in the River Wye during a Duke of Edinburgh Award expedition near Glasbury in Powys on June 30. Umar, who was a student at Leyton Sixth Form College in London, had been hiking when the incident occurred. Emergency services responded quickly to reports that a male had entered the water and was missing, initiating an extensive search operation.

Authorities, including Dyfed-Powys Police, mountain rescue volunteers, firefighters, and the National Police Air Service, were involved in the efforts to locate Umar. His body was eventually recovered, and police provided support to his friends at a nearby scout hut following the discovery. The Duke of Edinburgh Award organisation expressed that it was working closely with Umar’s college and other relevant bodies to understand the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking event.

Umar’s family shared a deeply emotional tribute, describing their overwhelming grief over the loss of their son, brother, and grandson. They recalled his loving nature, enjoyment of basketball, gym workouts, and spending time with friends and family. “We will always remember Umar for his kindness, warmth and sense of humour,” they said, while also requesting privacy as they mourn.

Leyton Sixth Form College released a statement confirming Umar’s death as a tragic accident and noted that he was a valued member of their community. The college is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation and has been providing support to staff and students affected by the incident. Remembering Umar as a “much-loved student,” they spoke of the significant impact he had on those who knew him and the profound void his passing has left behind.
