Parts of the UK are expected to experience temperatures reaching as high as 30°C over the coming weekend as a potential heatwave takes shape. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued heat health alerts covering much of the Midlands and the south-east of England, effective from 3:00 pm BST on Wednesday through to 8:00 pm on Monday.
The rise in temperatures is attributed to a “heat dome” forming across Europe, which will push the mercury higher in the coming days. By Tuesday, the south-east of England may officially reach heatwave status, as maximum daily temperatures are forecast to surpass 27°C for three consecutive days. This comes after last month saw historic highs for May, including a record-breaking 35.1°C at Kew Gardens in London, alongside new records in Wales and Ireland where temperatures hit 32.9°C in Cardiff and 30°C in County Clare. The Met Office described that spring heatwave as “one of the UK’s most extreme high temperature events in our observational records.”
Looking at the more immediate forecast, Thursday is likely to bring temperatures between 25°C and 28°C across the Midlands, East Anglia, and the south-east of England, accompanied by some sunshine. Other parts of the UK, however, will see cloudier conditions with some rainfall, with temperatures more typical of mid-June, ranging between 17°C and 24°C. Friday’s outlook points to further wet weather for Northern Ireland, Scotland, and northern and western England and Wales, but drier, sunnier conditions are expected across all areas by the weekend, with light winds and temperatures generally more moderate, between 19°C and 26°C.
In southern and eastern England, the heat is set to intensify on Friday, with temperatures climbing to between 27°C and 31°C. Although Saturday will be cooler, Sunday and Monday may see the mercury rise again, reaching highs in the upper twenties and potentially up to 31°C or 32°C. By Monday, thunderstorms could develop across England and Wales. As the heat lingers into Tuesday, some parts of the south-east are likely to experience official heatwave conditions, with temperatures exceeding 27°C or 28°C for three consecutive days. It’s important to note that heatwave thresholds differ geographically, ranging from 25°C in Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales, and parts of south-west England, up to 28°C in London
