Conor Carey, aged 36 and residing in the Glassheena Road area of Downpatrick, appeared at Downpatrick Magistrate’s Court facing serious allegations. He is charged with the attempted murder of a police officer, as well as two counts of aggravated vehicle taking causing injury and driving without insurance. A detective inspector from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed during the hearing that Carey could be linked to these charges.
The incident in question occurred in the early hours of Sunday when a police officer was struck by a stolen police vehicle in Downpatrick. The officer, who discharged one round from his firearm during the event, sustained significant injuries. Although a solicitor for Carey questioned the severity of the officer’s injuries, the court was informed that while not life-threatening, the injuries were serious, including a broken wrist, a crushed leg injury, head trauma, and multiple cuts and bruises. The injured officer remains hospitalized and continues to receive medical care.
During the court proceedings, Carey’s solicitor asked the PSNI detective if anyone else had been arrested on attempted murder charges related to this incident before Carey. The detective responded, “I don’t believe he was arrested for attempted murder, no.” Furthermore, it was stated that Carey denies any involvement in the matter. No application for bail was made, and Carey was remanded in custody with a return appearance set for 18 June.
In connection to the same incident, another man, Kieran Turley, aged 27 from Vianstown Road in Downpatrick, also appeared at the magistrate’s court. He faced charges including dangerous driving, driving while disqualified, and using a motor vehicle without insurance
