Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has publicly criticized tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, accusing him of fostering division in the wake of Henry Nowak’s murder. The teenager’s death has sparked controversy following the release of footage showing police restraining Nowak with handcuffs while he pleaded that he was struggling to breathe. The individual responsible for the killing, Vickrum Digwa, had claimed to be the victim of a racially motivated attack.

In Southampton, where Nowak was killed, violent demonstrations have taken place. On social media platform X, owned by Musk, the billionaire voiced several criticisms regarding how the police handled the teenager during the incident. In response, Starmer, during a visit to York, condemned Musk’s involvement, describing it as unwelcome interference in British politics. He emphasized that Nowak’s family had called for calm amid the heightened tensions.

Starmer underlined the importance of maintaining national values, stating, “We need to also assert who we are as a country, because Musk, again, has been interfering in our politics in the last few days, trying to whip up division – that is not who we are in Britain.” He continued by reaffirming the British identity as reasonable and tolerant, adding, “When we have a terrible case like Henry’s case, Henry Nowak, we react calmly, as his family have done.”

The prime minister also provided an update on the official response to the incident, noting that the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) was examining the actions of the officers involved. Additionally, the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) is reviewing its guidance on racial matters as a result of this case. While acknowledging the necessity for potential reforms, Starmer called on politicians to heed the family’s plea for calm and responsible leadership rather than exploiting the tragedy for political division
