Newly released bodycam footage captures police officers handcuffing 18-year-old Henry Nowak as he lay dying. Due to the distressing nature of the material, the BBC has chosen to mute certain segments of the video.
The footage, recorded in December, shows Vickrum Digwa—Nowak’s killer—claiming he was racially abused by the teenager and acted in self-defense, a statement later proven false. Digwa told officers that his turban had been knocked off and that he had sustained injuries.
According to police, they consulted with Henry Nowak’s family before making the footage public. The video was also used during court proceedings. On Monday, Digwa, aged 23, was sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years. He admitted to using a 21cm (8-inch) blade, which he claimed to carry as part of his Sikh faith, to fatally stab Nowak, who was walking home alone after a night out with friends in Southampton on December 3. The judge rejected Digwa’s allegations of racism.
Outside the court, Henry Nowak’s father, Mark Nowak, expressed deep anguish over the stark difference in treatment between his son and Digwa. He described the situation as “unbearable,” stating, “Henry should not have died on the streets of Southampton in police custody,” labeling it “inhumane and degrading.” He also highlighted how Digwa “was afforded decency” and noted that “we understand, he was never handcuffed at all.” Mark Nowak added, “Henry did not die with dignity. He did not die with the care he deserved. He lost consciousness before anyone believed him.
