A London-based runner has made history by becoming the first individual globally to complete 1,000 parkruns. Darren Wood, 43, from Carshalton in south London, described the free community running events as life-saving during a period when he was grappling with mental health challenges. He expressed hope that parkrun could offer similar support to others facing difficulties.
On Saturday, Wood was warmly celebrated at Morden in south London, where he crossed the finish line to receive a guard of honour from fellow members of the Sutton Runners club, alongside friends and family. In recognition of this milestone, he was awarded a distinctive yellow T-shirt marking the 1,000 parkrun achievement, as well as a cape and crown, earning him the nickname “the king of parkrun.”
Wood’s involvement with parkrun dates back to October 2004, and he has been a regular participant ever since. His motivation stemmed from personal struggles including debt and the breakdown of his marriage. Reflecting on his experience, Wood shared, “I wasn’t judged any more, I could just be me and I could talk to people and explain how I was feeling,” emphasizing how parkrun provided a sense of normalcy during tough times.
Currently ahead of his nearest parkrun competitor by 36 runs, Wood admitted that the spotlight on his achievement has felt “a little bit overwhelming” but considered the recognition a pleasant celebration. He underscored the inclusive nature of parkrun, stating: “Everyone is welcome and it will change and save lives if we can get more and more people involved. Because parkrun has changed and saved my life and it will do that for others, I would almost guarantee that.
