Raheem Sterling was taken into custody on suspicion of drug-driving following an incident where he reportedly crashed his Lamborghini into barriers on the M3 motorway in Hampshire. The former England international, who last played for Dutch club Feyenoord, was involved in the collision near the Minley Interchange on Thursday morning.

According to Hampshire Police, the crash occurred just before 9 a.m. on the southbound M3. They confirmed that no other vehicles were involved and no injuries resulted from the incident. The 31-year-old driver, originally from Berkshire, was arrested on suspicion of several offenses, including driving while impaired by drugs, driving dangerously, possession of a Class C substance, and failure to provide a specimen. He has since been released on bail pending further investigation.

A representative close to Sterling acknowledged the arrest but emphasized to BBC Sport that there is “no proof” that any drugs were present in Sterling’s system. The source also mentioned that Sterling has endured “an extremely tough couple of years,” feeling “worthless” and “forgotten about.”

Sterling’s recent career has been marked by change, having joined Feyenoord in February on a short-term contract after departing Chelsea in January. Despite the move, he only made eight appearances in the Netherlands. His exit from Chelsea followed a mutual agreement over the final 18 months of his contract, which was reportedly worth more than £300,000 per week. During his time at Chelsea, including a loan spell at Arsenal, Sterling made 59 league appearances. Earlier in his career, he won four Premier League titles with Manchester City and began his senior journey with Liverpool in 2015. Sterling earned 82 England caps, with his last international appearance occurring at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar
