A young British man, Ayrton Redfearn, 23, tragically lost his life in the Donetsk region of Ukraine on 9 May. Ayrton, originally from south Devon, had joined a specialized unit supporting the Ukrainian army in 2025. His mother, who prefers to be called Natasha, shared the heartbreaking news of his death, describing her son as “beautiful, strong and incredibly brave.”
Natasha reflected on the difficult days leading up to and following the loss, revealing the constant dread she felt of receiving devastating news. “This fear became reality on the evening of 11 May and the world of myself, and Ayrton’s 10-year-old brother, then fell apart,” she said. Despite her grief, she expressed a desire to draw strength from Ayrton’s courage, saying, “We are trying to have just 1% of the strength, bravery and courage of Ayrton, and if we can do this, it will help us to eventually come to terms with our life without him.” She also expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support from both those who knew Ayrton and strangers alike. Ayrton had been due to receive a bravery award just days after his death.
Ayrton’s background included attendance at Churston Ferrers Grammar School and early involvement in the Torquay Air Cadets, which he joined at the age of 12. At 17, he enlisted in the Royal Air Force before his overseas travels. The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) confirmed they are assisting the family and maintaining contact with Ukrainian authorities. They continue to advise against all travel to many areas of Ukraine, including Donetsk.
Tributes to Ayrton have also come from those who knew him well. Dr Ben King, Ayrton’s tutor for five years, recalled him as “highly intelligent” and a “lovely lad” admired by many. King noted that Ayrton quickly made a positive impression at school, being voted house representative early on. He spoke of the shock felt by the school community upon hearing of Ayrton’s death, describing him as a “lovable rogue” with much potential.
