French authorities have decided to halt the implementation of new European Union border checks at the Port of Dover following significant delays faced by travellers on Saturday. The port authority indicated that this decision was made in response to the worsening situation with border control procedures. Their aim is to alleviate the long queues and ease congestion on the access roads surrounding the port.
The May bank holiday period serves as an important trial for the recently introduced EU border checks. Despite fluctuating processing times at the port during Saturday morning, traffic remained heavy, with roads leading to the check-in area described as heavily congested. At Dover, passengers must pass through the French border before boarding cross-Channel ferries. Although the new system’s fingerprint and photo-capturing machines had not yet been activated, border officials still had the task of creating traveller profiles linked to the new Entry/Exit System (EES), which contributed to slower processing times.
To manage the traffic buildup, authorities have restricted outbound traffic from the port to the A2 route exclusively. The port has also provided reassurance to passengers who miss their scheduled ferry departure owing to the extended wait times, confirming that they will be accommodated on the next available crossing. This development coincides with an unusually warm May bank holiday weekend forecast across the UK.
Temperatures continue to rise following the warmest day of the year recorded on Friday, with highs reaching 28.4C in locations such as Heathrow, Cranwell, and Cambridge. Forecasts predict daytime temperatures in many areas will be in the upper 20s Celsius, with some parts expected to experience temperatures climbing into the low 30s by the upcoming week. Amber heat health alerts have been issued in parts of England as the mercury is expected to stay above 30C during the weekend, approaching the May record high of 32.8C
