Archibald concludes her career as one of the most distinguished track cyclists in Britain and is widely regarded as Scotland’s most accomplished female athlete. Although she started her cycling journey relatively late, joining Britain’s endurance squad at 19, she made an immediate impact by securing the European team pursuit title during her first senior competition.
Throughout the 13 years that followed, Archibald collected an impressive total of 51 medals across various major competitions, including the world championships, European championships, Commonwealth Games, and the Olympics. Her achievements encompass two Olympic gold medals, an Olympic silver, Commonwealth gold, seven world titles, and a remarkable 21 European titles, the most by any rider. However, her medal tally might have been even greater if not for her withdrawals from the Birmingham Commonwealth Games in 2022 and the Olympics in 2024, both occurring shortly before the events.
Reflecting on her career, Archibald expressed her love for racing and the honor she felt competing alongside the nation’s best athletes. She said, “I love racing my bike. And it’s been a true honour to race my bike alongside the best in the country.” While she does not aspire to leave behind a grand legacy, she hopes to have influenced positively those she has worked with during her time in the sport.
Now focusing on training to become a nurse, Archibald has developed a deep passion for the profession. She remarked, “I’ve fallen completely in love with the whole thing,” highlighting how meaningful it is to be someone people can trust during times of need. Her contribution to cycling has also been celebrated by Great Britain Cycling Team performance director Stephen Park, who praised her “incredible legacy” and acknowledged the significant moments she has provided to the sport’s fans. Park stated, “Katie has described herself as ‘obsessed’ with the sport and her relentless drive in the pursuit of excellence combined with a deep passion for track cycling has led her to be one of Britain’s most decorated track cyclists.
