The 2027 London Marathon has attracted an unprecedented number of applicants through its public ballot, reaching a record high. A total of 1,338,544 individuals have put their names forward for the race scheduled to take place on 25 April, surpassing last year’s record figure of 1,133,813 applicants.
The previous marathon in 2026 set a milestone with 59,830 runners completing the event, marking it as the world’s largest one-day fundraising occasion. Hugh Brasher, the chief executive of London Marathon Events, highlighted the significance of the growing interest, stating, “This astonishing total of applicants firmly establishes London as the world’s most sought-after marathon.”
According to Brasher, the event’s goal is to motivate people of all ages and abilities to engage in physical activity, and the remarkable number of applicants reflects the wide appeal and influence of the London Marathon. The allocation of places will be determined through a random ballot, with the results expected to be announced in early July.
For the first time, over one million applications have been received solely from within the UK, and the male and female registration numbers were almost equal. The marathon’s appeal was further showcased during the most recent race, where Kenya’s Sabastian Sawe became the first to complete a competitive marathon in under two hours, while Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa set a new women’s world record
