Royal Mail has faced allegations of deliberately concealing undelivered mail during a visit by an MP to a delivery office in Wrexham. The claim was raised by local councillor Marc Jones at a recent executive board meeting, amid ongoing complaints from residents about delayed postal deliveries that have reportedly caused some to miss important hospital appointments.

Jones specifically accused Royal Mail management of hiding mail from Andrew Ranger, the Labour MP for Wrexham, when he visited the sorting office over the Christmas period. Jones emphasized the seriousness of this claim, stating, “I’ve been told that when the local MP visited Wrexham sorting office, because I think this is a specific problem in Wrexham, that the mail was concealed by management from the MP.” He added, “Now, it’s a very serious allegation, and I’m taking the word of people who were there, but we really do need to get to the bottom of this.”

Following the meeting, MP Andrew Ranger responded that he was unaware of any attempt by Royal Mail to hide mail from him. “If this is correct, I am deeply concerned about this practice, and I will be contacting the sorting office,” he said. Ranger also welcomed the decision by Wrexham council to address Royal Mail’s performance issues formally. He indicated that both local residents and postal workers had reached out to him with concerns about delays, which he had previously raised with UK government business minister Blair McDougall. Ranger expressed optimism about the growing collective effort to hold Royal Mail accountable: “The more of us that call out Royal Mail for their actions and their continual service failures that affect the people of Wrexham, the better.”

In response, Royal Mail defended its operations by citing independently verified statistics, which indicate that 99% of items posted by the last advised posting date were delivered in time for Christmas. A spokesperson acknowledged that it is concerning when expected deliveries are delayed but noted that in north Wales, 84.8% of first-class letters reach their destination the next working day. Nationally, approximately 92% of letters are delivered on time, with 99.4% arriving within a week. The company admitted that while most mail is delivered as scheduled, short-term and localized issues sometimes occur, which they aim to resolve promptly
