Flintshire mum jailed after cover-up for hit-and-run son

A mother has been sentenced to a prison term exceeding two years after she orchestrated a cover-up following a hit-and-run incident in which her son severely injured a six-year-old child. Terry Follows was convicted of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice due to her significant role in aiding her son, Kaylem Longhurst, in escaping accountability for the crash.

Other family members were involved in the cover-up as well. Longhurst’s sister, Cara Haran, along with her partner, Shane Hunt, took part in efforts to conceal evidence linked to the collision. After the incident on Central Drive in Shotton, Flintshire, that occurred on 11 September 2024, Hunt drove Longhurst to York, while Haran destroyed the clothing Longhurst had been wearing.

Longhurst was eventually apprehended in York and admitted to dangerous driving. During the trial held at Mold Crown Court, all four individuals—Longhurst, Hunt, Haran, and Follows—were found guilty of conspiracy to pervert the course of justice. Sentences were handed down with Follows receiving 26 months, Hunt 21 months, and Haran nine months in prison.

The judge emphasized that Follows had actively coordinated the scheme, despite numerous reasons to choose a lawful path. He noted both Follows and Hunt displayed no remorse for the serious injuries inflicted on the young boy, Arlo. Remarking on the irreversible harm, the judge said, “No sentence I can pass can correct the terrible wrong that was done to this little boy.” He further detailed how Longhurst knowingly fled the scene of the accident, acknowledging at trial that he believed he might have killed the child. The judge revealed that Longhurst contacted his mother soon after, leading her to organize a conspiracy that included moving the motorcycle to a nearby alleyway and attempting to remove all evidence of the incident, even as emergency services, including a helicopter, arrived to assist Arlo
