A new museum dedicated exclusively to the art of illustration is set to open its doors in Clerkenwell, London, this June. This institution represents the largest museum of its kind worldwide and is the fulfillment of a vision that has taken more than two decades to realize. The museum aims to serve as an inspiring space for illustrators and art enthusiasts alike.
The Quentin Blake Centre for Illustration is the creation of renowned British illustrator Quentin Blake. Located within the grounds of an 18th-century waterworks site, the centre includes three galleries that will present a rotating series of exhibitions celebrating the wide-ranging forms of illustration. Quentin Blake expressed his excitement, saying, “I have long dreamt of a permanent place with ‘Illustration’ above the door, and now the amazing reality is that we have it.”
Blake also shared his pride in having the centre bear his name, highlighting the universal nature of illustration as a varied and rich language. “I am proud to think the centre has my name on it – illustration is a wonderful universal and varied language. Here we shall celebrate its traditions and welcome the astonishing diversity of visual language from across the world. Hurrah!” The inaugural exhibition will focus on British-Sri Lankan multidisciplinary artist Murugiah, showcasing work that addresses themes of identity and mental health through vivid prints, paintings, and sketches.
Beyond its exhibition spaces, the centre offers additional resources including a free public library, gardens, learning studios, and informative displays that explore the history and breadth of illustration. Noteworthy features of the site include London’s oldest surviving windmill, which will be used to host community and illustrator residencies, further encouraging artistic collaboration and engagement within this historic venue
