Liverpool is preparing to host a week-long series of events aimed at uniting residents, businesses, and community partners in a collective effort to accelerate climate action within the city. Scheduled for 21–27 June, this initiative—Liverpool Climate Action Week—will highlight the ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions while promoting better health and fostering new economic opportunities throughout the region.
The event program will concentrate on several crucial themes such as energy, transportation, waste management, biodiversity, and urban development. This approach reflects Liverpool’s comprehensive strategy to reach net zero emissions. Throughout the week, participants will learn about a wide range of practical projects, from grassroots community efforts to large-scale infrastructure developments, demonstrating how individuals and organizations can contribute meaningfully to environmental sustainability.
Since declaring a climate emergency in 2019, Liverpool City Council has committed to ambitious goals, aiming to achieve net zero emissions across its own operations by 2030 and extend that target to the whole city by 2040. Liverpool Climate Action Week seeks to raise awareness, inspire changes in daily habits, and build momentum toward these goals. The event also showcases the city’s international leadership role, notably as the world’s first UN Accelerator City, where culture and innovation are harnessed to drive decarbonisation efforts and share valuable insights globally.
Designed to reach a broad audience, including community groups, businesses, and individual residents, the week serves as a platform to deepen understanding of climate challenges and promote the city’s key sustainability projects. These include initiatives in low-carbon energy, sustainable transportation, and upgrading buildings—all essential elements for reducing emissions and improving the quality of life for Liverpool’s inhabitants. Encouraging active participation, the event supports Liverpool’s broader mission to integrate sustainability into daily life, stimulate economic growth, alleviate fuel poverty, and develop greener, healthier neighborhoods.
Cllr Liam Robinson, Leader of Liverpool City Council, expressed the city’s commitment by stating: “Liverpool is leading the way when it comes to tackling climate change, but we know there is always more to do. Climate Action Week is about bringing people together to showcase what’s already happening across our city and to inspire others to take part.
