Liverpool’s libraries are gearing up to mark World Book Day this March with a variety of free activities designed for families and children. The events include everything from storytelling and crafts to author visits and interactive workshops, all aimed at engaging kids up to 12 years old. In addition to public sessions at several local branches, there will be special programming tailored specifically for primary school students.
Scheduled for Thursday, 5 March 2026, World Book Day seeks to encourage children to discover the joy and enriching experience of reading for pleasure. This year’s celebration is particularly significant as it coincides with the National Year of Reading 2026, making the festivities in Liverpool more extensive than ever before. For the first time, every library across the city is participating, expanding the opportunities for children and families to get involved.
Events will take place at various locations including Allerton, Old Swan, Toxteth, Wavertree, and West Derby libraries. For example, Allerton will host “Once Upon a Page” performance workshops, led by Altru Drama, on Saturday 7 March. These workshops will engage two different age groups (5-8 years and 9-12 years) through dynamic and playful storytelling activities. Similarly, the Teeny Tiny Theatre company will conduct their “Tiny Tales – Story Explorer” sessions focusing on children aged 0–5 at several branches such as Old Swan, Wavertree, and West Derby, combining storytelling, songs, and imaginative play.
Another highlight includes a World Book Day storytelling and craft event in Toxteth, featuring creative activities and music with Creative Spaces Co on 7 March. Families interested in joining these events can visit the Liverpool City Council’s library events web page to find out more and secure places for various sessions
