In 2025, Great Britain experienced a record-breaking year for electricity generation from renewable energy sources, according to an analysis by the BBC using provisional data from the National Energy System Operator (Neso). Wind power emerged as the largest single contributor within the renewable sector, while solar energy saw a substantial increase of nearly one-third compared to 2024 figures. This surge in solar output was supported by both the UK’s sunniest year on record and a wider deployment of solar panels across the country. Despite these gains in renewables, electricity generation from fossil gas also edged upward slightly, underscoring ongoing challenges in achieving the government’s ambitious “clean power” objectives slated for 2030.
Pranav Menon, a senior research associate at the Aurora Energy Research think tank, commented on the renewable energy landscape, noting, “It has been quite a strong year in terms of deployment of renewables.” However, he cautioned that the exponential growth needed to meet the 2030 targets remains elusive, stating, “[But] what we’re not seeing is kind of the exponential scale-up that you’d need to get to clean power 2030, because those targets are very, very ambitious.” The government’s “clean power” goal envisions drastically reducing the use of polluting gas in electricity production by 2030, alongside commitments to lower energy bills by as much as £300. It is important to note that Neso data and this target focus on Great Britain, excluding Northern Ireland, which operates under its own separate electricity transmission system.
Examining the detailed numbers for 2025, renewables including wind, solar, hydro, and biomass generated more than 127 terawatt hours (TWh) of electricity, surpassing the previous high of 119 TWh recorded in 2024.
