The tragic death of 75-year-old Bolivian national Fredi Rivero in a street attack in London has resulted in three teenage girls being detained after admitting manslaughter. The incident, which took place near a bus stop in Islington on 27 February, involved the girls, aged 14, 16, and 17 at the time, pushing, shoving, kicking, and punching Mr. Rivero. One of the girls even filmed the assault on her phone and took his glasses during the attack.
Mr. Rivero was found unconscious on the pavement with a severe head injury and in cardiac arrest by police officers. He was rushed to the Royal London Hospital but sadly passed away the following day. The court sentenced the girls, who cannot be named due to their age, to detention – with the youngest receiving two and a half years, the middle one getting three and a half years, and the oldest being sentenced to four years.
In a victim impact statement at the Old Bailey, Mr. Rivero’s daughter, Carla Rivero, expressed that her father’s “death was forced upon him” and spoke about his kind and gentle nature. She fondly remembered him as a kind individual who never caused any harm to anyone. Ms. Rivero mentioned that her father will always remain in her heart, emphasizing the impact of losing such a beloved figure in her life.
During the court proceedings, Louise Oakley, prosecuting, highlighted the Crown’s argument that the attack by the girls was entirely unprovoked. CCTV footage presented in court depicted the girls interacting with Mr. Rivero after getting off a bus, with one of them initially making a peace sign. However, their demeanor changed as they went back to him, escalating the situation. Mobile phone footage also captured the violent act, showing one of the girls forcefully removing Mr. Rivero’s glasses before another punched him, causing him to fall.
