Liverpool’s Adult Learning Service (ALS) is set to hold a series of open days and skills assessments designed to guide individuals towards suitable vocational courses. These well-received events provide an opportunity for prospective learners to engage with the dedicated ALS staff and tutors who are available to help identify the most appropriate courses based on individual needs.

Starting in January, a range of courses will be available, including introductory and level 1 certificates in Beauty, Reflexology and Aromatherapy, Caring for Children at Entry Level 3, Preparing to Work in Schools at Level 1, and Supporting Teaching and Learning at Level 2. The open days for these vocational courses will run on a drop-in basis at two key locations: Norris Adult Learning Centre (ALC) and Park Road ALC. Sessions begin from 26 January and continue through early February, offering multiple opportunities throughout the week to visit either venue.

In addition to vocational courses, the ALS also offers open days and skills checks for a variety of subjects such as English, maths, digital skills, IELTS English proficiency, and work and employability courses. Detailed schedules for all sessions, including venues and dates, are available on the Liverpool City Council website. The full course catalogue can also be accessed online for those interested in exploring all available learning options.

Many ALS courses come at no cost for individuals earning below £35,864 annually, those in receipt of certain benefits, or for specific subjects like English, Maths, and IT. For other courses, flexible payment plans are offered, allowing fees to be paid over three months. The service, which receives funding from the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, supports around 4,500 learners annually and has been rated “good” by Ofsted, with particular praise for learners’ attitudes and personal development. Cllr Joanne Kennedy, Cabinet Member for Employment, Educational Attainment and Skills at Liverpool City Council, encourages prospective students by emphasizing the support available, stating: “It’s the ideal time to think about changes to make in the new year – and the Liverpool Adult Learning Service is here to support you! Returning to the classroom can be a daunting step and that’s why the ALS open days and skill checks are such a great idea. Just drop into any session and have a chat with the team and they will get you on the best course for your ambitions and skills levels.” She also highlighted additional support services, saying these can include assistance with transport, digital devices, or childcare to help learners on their educational journey
