Liverpool City Council was honored with a prestigious award during the recent Department for Transport Special Recognition Awards ceremony. The Collaborative Partnership Award was presented to the Council’s Transport, Highways, and Parking team at an event hosted by the Local Council Roads Innovations Group (LCRIG) on Wednesday, October 1st.

The award recognized the success of the Highways Investment Programme (HIP), a multi-million pound initiative carried out in partnership with Dowhigh, Huyton Asphalt, Colas, Mott Macdonald, AECOM, Wilde Consulting Engineers, and Amey. The program has brought about a significant transformation in Liverpool’s road and street infrastructure, with a focus on safety, accessibility, and sustainability.

Through two major phases, the HIP has resurfaced over 100,000 square meters of roads across the city, installed more than 100 tactile crossings to enhance pedestrian safety, and implemented various improvements to create safer pavements in different areas of Liverpool. Additionally, the initiative has utilized sustainable construction methods to preserve heritage streets like Blackburne Place and has introduced new cycling infrastructure, including upgrades to the Loop Line and a new bike track in Everton Park.

The impact of the program goes beyond infrastructure improvements, as it has also generated employment opportunities. Nineteen long-term unemployed individuals have secured positions as a result of the initiative, and it has supported 163 weeks of apprenticeships. Judges commended the project for its overall strength and social value delivery, particularly in terms of creating apprenticeship opportunities and assisting the long-term unemployed. Councillor Dan Barrington, Cabinet Member for Transport and Connectivity, expressed delight at receiving the Collaborative Partnership Award and emphasized the hard work, innovation, and dedication of all parties involved in the Highways Investment Programme. The initiative not only enhances the quality and safety of Liverpool’s roads but also contributes to job creation and skill development for the local community
